The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for Nigeria's next presidential and National Assembly elections, marking the official kickoff of the 2027 general election cycle.
The electoral body also scheduled governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections for Saturday, March 6, 2027, providing early clarity for political parties, candidates and other stakeholders preparing for the next national polls.
Naija247news gathered that the dates were announced in a statement released after a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, where the commission unveiled its full election timetable and sequence of activities.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, who addressed journalists at the briefing, said the early release of the timetable is intended to provide sufficient preparation time for all stakeholders in line with constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act.
Naija247news understands that Amupitan emphasised the commission's commitment to delivering free, fair and credible elections, noting that the timetable was carefully structured to ensure smooth operations across all phases of the electoral process.
According to Naija247news, the chairman also stated that the commission is awaiting final approval of amendments to the Electoral Act by the National Assembly, while assuring that preparations are already underway based on existing legal frameworks.
Naija247news reports that the announcement continues INEC's long-term election planning strategy, first institutionalised under former chairman Mahmood Yakubu, who introduced a forward-looking election calendar to reduce uncertainty and improve planning.
Nigeria operates a four-year electoral cycle under the supervision of INEC, covering presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Assembly elections.
The staggered sequencing of federal and state-level elections has been a consistent feature of the country's democratic structure to enhance coordination and administrative efficiency.
Naija247news gathered that the Electoral Act 2022 mandates INEC to provide advance notice of election dates to allow political parties to organise primaries and candidate nominations within specified timelines.
Naija247news understands that early publication of election timetables has become a key strategy to improve transparency, reduce legal disputes arising from party primaries and address logistical challenges that have affected past elections.
The commission said preparations for the 2027 elections will cover voter registration updates, recruitment and training of personnel, as well as procurement and deployment of election materials and technology.
According to Naija247news, INEC noted that the timetable allows for continuous voter registration and collection of Permanent Voter Cards by eligible citizens across the country.
Naija247news reports that the commission will also recruit and train ad hoc staff nationwide, while deploying election materials and technological infrastructure required for efficient accreditation, voting and result management.
The separation of presidential and National Assembly elections from governorship and state Assembly polls is expected to enable better deployment of personnel, strengthen logistics coordination and improve monitoring of the electoral process.
Naija247news gathered that political parties are expected to align their primary election schedules and candidate nomination processes with INEC's timeline once detailed guidelines are released.
According to Naija247news, all parties must conduct primaries within stipulated timeframes, comply strictly with provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and adhere to campaign timelines and spending limits to be issued by the commission.
Citizens have also been encouraged to verify and update their voter registration details ahead of the polls to ensure broad participation.
Naija247news understands that the leadership of INEC under Amupitan, who was sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2025, is prioritising transparency and stakeholder engagement in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
The commission further called on civil society organisations, observers and voters to actively participate in the electoral process, stressing that broad-based engagement is essential for strengthening public trust and credibility in Nigeria's democratic system..
